Being Yourself - How to Live an Authentic Life
By... MeKila Herring
All over the media, day after day, we see this official or that official being exposed for some heinous misrepresentation or inappropriate behavior. To live authentically has become the new chosen goal. But, how do we do that exactly? How do we live an authentic life? Simply by being yourself.
So often I hear, "I do not even know what it means to be myself anymore."
Society has molded us from the time we were very young to act appropriately and to behave this or that particular way. It is no wonder that we have lost ourselves in the midst of all of that training.
Now, as adults, we find ourselves wondering, "What the heck happened to me?" "Where did I go?" "Why is it so hard to uncover the real me?"
It is really not hard to uncover "the real me"... we have just forgotten how and the muscles to do so have become somewhat atrophied.
We were each born with an internal guidance system that is the best navigation system in existence for helping us travel through life. Unfortunately, we have developed habits that override that innate guidance system. We have trained ourselves to do what is expected from us. Often this training has come at the cost of deadening our inner voices.
Still, all is not lost. This inner guidance system is an innate mechanism that never truly is lost. Just because we have quieted our abilities to listen to it, does not mean that it has stopped working. We need only to reawaken our senses to the messages we are constantly exposed to.
The first thing to do is take a deep breath. It is never as dire as it first appears. This is going to be fun. With a little exercise and forethought you will be surprising yourself with your inner knowing in no time. When you think about it, what could be easier than "being yourself?"
Now that you have calmed your mind down a bit by taking a few deep breaths, listen up as I give you the biggest clue to being yourself. Stay in touch with how you feel.
In any given moment, be aware of whether you feel good or bad, happy or sad, confident or fearful. In the moments that you are feeling good, happy and confident, you are being yourself. In those moments that you are feeling bad, sad, or fearful, you are doing something that takes you away from being yourself.
Deep down we all know what is good for us. We all know who we are. When we think or act outside of that inner deep self knowing, our emotions kick in to jar us back onto the path that will allow us to express ourselves authentically. When we are reacting or operating from places that do not feel good, we have lost our authenticity and are being warned about it through the very nature of our feelings.
So, be aware of how you feel. In each moment reach for the thoughts that help you feel better. When faced with an unpleasant thought... or you simply become aware of being in an unpleasant feeling, shift to a better feeling thought or activity. Soon you will find yourself walking through your days with a perpetual smile on your face. Then you will know that you are living authentically.
